Recently, we ventured to the Northern Realms to create The Witcher potion Superior White Honey. It was really fun to venture into a different universe and explore the herb-craft in a game with such rich lore. I have dabbled in the first and second game, and love watching The Witcher 3 streams on Twitch. Lots of my friends really love The Witcher series, so I spent a bit of time talking with them about the game and nailing down a potion to recreate for the stream.
In the game, like most RPGs, you can choose different paths that allow you to specialise (spec) into different traits. One popular spec focuses on the use of decoctions (the use of this word in-game is different to naturopathy) and potions to gain powerful effects, crafted from Alchemy. These potions and decoctions are toxic to normal humans, and Witchers can take them due to their mutations. A side effect of using lots of decoctions is called toxicity and players need to cleanse it as they reach their threshold. Enter, Superior White Honey, a detoxification potion that players can create to clear themselves of every increasing levels of toxicity.
In game, Superior White Honey requires:
- 1x White gull
- 1x Enhanced white honey
- 4x Honeysuckle
- 4x White myrtle petals
- 1x Balisse fruit
- 1x Hellebore petals
- 1x Vitriol
To recreate this potion, I firstly tried to think of what sort of potion I could make that would be cleansing and also match the fantasy of the in-game ingredients. I have focused on breaking up the potion into two sections: firstly creating White Gull, and then making an Superior White Honey infusion.
I think making a warm and sweet infusion would be perfect for this potion. After a long day of questing in the Northern Realms, there is nothing like a nice, warm, detoxifying potion to get you back to normal.
What is an infusion?
An infusion are the aerial parts (softer parts like flowers and leaves) heated in water, allowing their flavour and water soluble constituents to be extracted. When you see infusion, think tea.
Juglans nigra (black walnut) shells are used in Traditional Chinese medicine as a detoxifying and cleansing tincture. It has a very sweet, nutty flavour in a 55% alcohol base, almost like Frangelico. This will be our balisse fruit in the recipe, and it also looks rather like vitriol. I already had black walnut tincture gifted to me (thank you Jocelyn!), but making your own follows the same steps as the other tinctures I have made.
Another herb traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a detoxifying and cleansing herb, members of the Lonicera species have sweet, honey tasting edible flowers. We are going to brew a honeysuckle infusion for this recipe, rather than making a tincture.
Manuka honey is a honey made from bees who have been consuming Leptospermum scoparium (manuka) pollen, a member of the myrtaceae family. It is well known for it’s antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects, linked to the constituent methylglyoxal. This powerhouse ingredient is going to be the enhanced white honey and white myrtle flowers in this recipe.
Superior White Honey
Makes 8 servings. Serve warm.
Skill level required: Apprentice Journeyman Expert Master
You will need:
- 300mL White Gull
- 40mL of 1:5 black walnut extract
- 2 heaped tablespoons of honeysuckle flowers, fresh or dried.
- 1 tablespoon of manuka honey
- Cups to serve
- Add all of the ingredients to a pot.
- Heat gently for 10 minutes, making sure the manuka honey is dissolved.
- Strain and serve.
- This can be refrigerated for 1 week, served cold or reheated.
